My years working in tourism as a destination marketer taught me an important thing when it comes to promoting your region to visitors: Think regionally. And in the Valley, that is not difficult to accomplish because our communities are so close to each other, allowing us locals to enjoy an incredible array of attractions. From our beach, considered one of the most beautiful in the nation, to our numerous nature and wildlife parks, hiking and biking trails, to antiques and high fashion shopping. The Valley is also known for its affordability.

But nothing gave me more pride than promoting the Valley as the world-class bird-watching destination it has become. That is why I am sharing “The Top 13 Best Places to Go Bird-Watching in America.”

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge appears on this list, and it is no surprise, as all of our foreign visitors ask to visit there because it is home to resident species such as Green Jays, Chachalacas, and Great Kiskadees. This means these birds can be spotted throughout the year, and not only during migration. There are also some of the rarest raptors at the refuge; the hook-billed kite and gray hawk attract experienced birders to the Valley.

As soon as our weather cools, I highly recommend visiting them. These days, when negativity and frustration dominate our news cycles, birdwatching offers an experience that calms our anxieties and reconnects us with Nature.

The footnote states that “Santa Ana sits near the border with Mexico and offers a mix of tropical and North American species. Green Jays, Chachalacas, and Altamira Orioles make regular appearances. It feels like stepping into another country without leaving the state.”

Another reason I enjoyed this brief listing is that it portrays the good and healthy side of news about the border that is commonly used to trigger negative feelings.

The article lists other amazing spots across our country that I’m putting down on my bucket list of natural wonders.

Happy Travels to all.
